Appearance: Bergamot is a small evergreen tree or shrub belonging to the rutaceae family, the plant height is generally 1-5 meters. Its shoots are usually purplish-red, with short, soft spines on the shoots and buds. The leaves are oblong, leathery, dark green and shiny, with undulating serrated edges. The flowers of Bergamot are mostly white, with 5 oblong petals and fragrant flowers, usually solitary or clustered in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is the most distinctive part of bergamot, its shape is strange, the top of the fruit split like fingers, open or clenched, different lengths, like the fingers of Buddha, so named. The fruit is golden brown when ripe, with a rough surface and many oil spots, and the flesh is almost completely degraded, without cloves and seeds.


Plant family Genus: Rutaceae citrus.

Common name: Buddha's hand, five finger orange, Feizhuo, Miluo orange, Fushou orange, etc.

Extraction part: Mainly the peel, which is rich in volatile aromatic substances, is the main source for extracting bergamot essential oil.

Extraction method: Commonly used cold pressing method, this method is to directly press the fresh bergamot peel, and squeeze out the essential oil through physical means, which can retain the natural activity and aroma of essential oil to the greatest extent. Steam distillation can also be used, using water vapor to bring out the essential oil components in the peel, through condensation, oil-water separation and other steps to obtain essential oil, but this method may decompose some of the heat-sensitive components, resulting in a loss of aroma and efficacy.

Main chemical components: The main components of bergamot essential oil include moniterpene compounds such as limonene, gamma-terpinene, laurene, and other alcohols and ester compounds such as linalool acetate, linalool, nerolol. These ingredients give bergamot its unique aroma and versatility.

Main origin: Originally from India, it is mainly distributed in China, Italy, France, the United States and other countries. In China, the main production areas are Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places. Among them, bergamot in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province, is famous for its unique quality and long planting history.

Aroma: It has a unique aroma of fresh, fruity and floral. The initial smell is fresh citrus fruit, followed by light floral notes, and finally with a hint of warm wood, rich layers, pleasing.

Aroma concentration: The aroma is strong and volatile, only a small amount can emit a significant aroma, and can be clearly smelled within a certain range.
